# Surveys

Ask attendees how the event went, on their phone and in their own language, then read the results with every comment translated for your team. Each attendee answers once from the link in their emails, or you can make a survey anonymous.

## Create a survey

1. Open an event and choose **Surveys** in the left sidebar.
2. Under **New survey**, enter a **Title**, for example "Post-event survey".
3. Turn on **Anonymous** if nobody's name should be kept with their answers.
4. Choose **Create survey**. The survey is saved as a draft and opens on its questions.

## Add questions

1. On the **Questions** tab, choose a kind under **Add a question**: | Kind | What attendees do | | --- | --- | | Rating, 1 to 5 | Pick a number from 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest). | | Would recommend, 0 to 10 | Say how likely they are to recommend the event to a colleague. | | One choice | Pick one of the choices you write. | | Several choices | Tick any of the choices you write. | | Comment | Write in their own words. | | Pick a session | Pick one of the agenda's sessions, shown in their language. Breaks and meals are left out. | The question is added with sample wording and saved at once.
2. Change the **Question** to your own words.
3. For a choice question, write each choice in its own box. Leave a box empty to drop that choice. If people already picked a choice you drop, Talli asks first and says how many picked it. Choose **Remove and clear those answers** to drop it anyway: those people's answer to that question is cleared, and the rest of their response stays. Write the choice back to keep its answers.
4. Tick **Must be answered** for questions people cannot skip.
5. Tick **Sensitive answers** for questions about health or other personal matters.
6. Use **Up**, **Down** and **Remove** to put the questions in order.
7. Choose **Save questions**.

**What attendees see** shows the survey on a phone as you build it. Talli translates the title, questions and choices into each of the event's languages; you can review them on the [Languages](https://www.tallievents.com/docs/languages) tab.

Ask your assistant

```
Create a post-event survey for the Spring Safety Seminar with an overall 1 to 5 rating, a would-recommend score, a pick of the best session and a comment question.
```

Select the prompt and copy it into Claude or ChatGPT connected to Talli. Uses `create_survey`, `set_survey_questions`. [Connect an assistant](https://www.tallievents.com/docs/ai-assistants#connect-claude)

## Choose the settings

1. Choose the **Settings** tab.
2. Change the **Title** or **Anonymous** if you need to.
3. Optionally pick when it **Closes**, in the event's time zone. Leave it empty to keep it open until you close it.
4. Choose **Save settings**.

The **Link** box shows the survey's address. An anonymous survey can be answered by anyone with it; a named survey only from each attendee's own link.

## Open the survey and send it

1. Choose **Open survey** at the top of the page.
2. Read what will happen and choose **Open survey** again. Talli refuses while the survey has no questions, the event is not published, or its closing time has passed.
3. Choose **Send reminder** to write a follow-up email. It starts with a link to `{{surveyLink}}`, which becomes each person's link in their language (see [Emails](https://www.tallievents.com/docs/emails)). On a named survey each confirmed attendee gets their own link with their ticket; people on the waitlist and contacts get none, and the editor warns you. On an anonymous survey everyone gets the same link, without a ticket.
4. Schedule or send the email as usual.

Choose **Close survey** to stop taking answers; **Reopen survey** takes answers again.

## What attendees see

1. The attendee opens the link from their email on their phone or computer. The page is in the language of their registration, and they can switch to any of the event's languages.
2. They answer and choose **Send answers**.
3. They see a thank-you message. On a named survey they can choose **Change my answers** while it is open; their one response is updated.

Coming back to the same link shows **You already answered**, with the same way to change the answers. A link with a ticket that is not this event's shows **This link is not valid**, and a closed survey shows that it is closed.

## Read the results

1. Choose the **Results** tab.
2. The top row shows:
   - **Response rate**, on a named survey: responses from the event's confirmed attendees out of how many there are, for example "54 of 103 registered". It never goes above 100%.
   - **Responses**, on an anonymous survey: how many answered. There is no rate, since anyone with the link can answer.
   - **Overall rating**: the average of the first 1 to 5 rating, or "-" before anyone rated.
   - **Would recommend**: the share who scored 9 or 10, and the Net Promoter Score (that share minus those who scored 0 to 6).
   - **Answered in other languages**: responses in a language other than the event's own. On an anonymous survey, languages with fewer than 5 responses are shown together as **Other language**, so a rare language cannot point at the one person who speaks it.
3. Each rating and score has a bar chart, with the most chosen answer highlighted. Choices and sessions show how many picked each.
4. **Comments** shows the newest comments first, with the attendee type, the language and their rating. Comments written in another language are shown translated into the event's language, marked **AI only**. Point at or focus a comment to see the original, or choose **Original in Spanish** (or the comment's language) to show it below. Choose **All comments** to see every one.

New comments in other languages are translated in the background; the page shows them as they arrive.

Ask your assistant

```
Summarize the survey results for the Spring Safety Seminar, including the main themes in the comments.
```

Select the prompt and copy it into Claude or ChatGPT connected to Talli. Uses `list_surveys`, `get_survey_results`. [Connect an assistant](https://www.tallievents.com/docs/ai-assistants#connect-claude)

## Export the responses

1. Choose **Export responses**.
2. Read what will be downloaded and choose **Download responses**.

The CSV has one row per response: when it was sent and last changed, the language, and a column per question. An anonymous survey's CSV has only the day each response was sent, and **Other** for languages with fewer than 5 responses. Translated comments get a second column with the translation. A named survey also has each attendee's name, email and attendee type; an anonymous one never does.

## Who can use it

Owners and admins create surveys, write questions, change settings, open and close surveys, and export responses. Staff can see the surveys and their results. Attendees answer from the public page; they need no account.

## Limits and edge cases

- A survey has up to 30 questions. Titles are up to 200 characters, questions up to 300, choices up to 200, and a choice question has 2 to 20 choices.
- Comments are up to 2,000 characters.
- A question people answered keeps its kind and cannot be removed, so their answers stay readable. Questions nobody answered yet can still change kind or go, even when the survey has responses. You can still reword an answered question; changing a choice's wording keeps the answers that picked it.
- Dropping a choice people picked clears that answer from their responses, after Talli asks.
- Whether a survey is anonymous cannot change once people have answered.
- A named survey takes one response per ticket, only from confirmed attendees of the event.
- An anonymous survey never records who answered. Its links carry no ticket, and a ticket added to the address by hand is ignored. It keeps only the day each response was sent (in the event's time zone), not the time, so answers cannot be matched to check-in times. Anyone with its link can answer, up to 10 times an hour from the same connection, so a script cannot flood it. The connection is kept only as a keyed hash that cannot be turned back into its address.
- Without scripts running in the browser, everything still works with plain forms: answering, changing answers, building questions (each button saves the list) and opening, where the question is asked in the page instead of a dialog.
- Named survey links carry the attendee's ticket, so the page is kept out of search engines and its address is not passed on to other sites.
- AI assistants do not see comments on questions marked **Sensitive answers**, unless an owner allowed it on the [AI assistants](https://www.tallievents.com/docs/ai-assistants) settings. They still see the counts.
- When you [clone an event](https://www.tallievents.com/docs/cloning), its surveys are copied as drafts with their questions and translations, and no responses.

## Coming soon

- Surveys for a single session.
- Reminders sent by themselves to people who have not answered.

## From an AI assistant

- `list_surveys` with `{ eventId }`: the event's surveys with status, whether they are anonymous, closing time, number of questions and responses, and the public path.
- `get_survey` with `{ surveyId }`: one survey with its questions, their choices (and the event's sessions for a session pick), which are required or sensitive, and which people answered.
- `create_survey` with `{ eventId, title }` and any of `anonymous`, `closes` or `questions` (owners and admins): a new draft.
- `set_survey_questions` with `{ surveyId, questions }` (owners and admins): every question in order, each with `type` (`rating5`, `nps`, `single`, `multi`, `text` or `session_pick`), `label`, and optionally `options`, `required` and `sensitive`. Pass a question's `id` and a choice's `value` from `get_survey` to keep them and their answers. Leaving out a choice people picked is refused with how many picked it; pass `removeAnsweredChoices: true`, after asking the person, to remove it and clear those answers.
- `update_survey` with `{ surveyId }` and any of `title`, `anonymous` or `closes` (owners and admins). `closes` is `"YYYY-MM-DDTHH:mm"` in the event's time zone, or null for none.
- `open_survey` with `{ surveyId }` (owners and admins): asks the person to confirm before attendees can answer.
- `close_survey` with `{ surveyId }` (owners and admins).
- `get_survey_results` with `{ surveyId }`: the same numbers and comments as the **Results** tab.
- `export_survey_responses` with `{ surveyId }` (owners and admins): asks the person to confirm, then returns a download link to the CSV.

Find `eventId` with `find_events`. Every tool that takes `surveyId` also takes an optional `eventId`; a survey of another event is then not found. Every change is recorded in the activity log.
